Why Are Antioxidants important and What are them?

Our body has natural healing abilities that work when we have a healthy and nutritious diet. Nature has provided many compounds that help us stay healthy and a diet rich in antioxidant foods is a sure way to help our body cells cope with everyday threats such as infections and the viruses that attack them. Free radicals are molecules with unpaired electrons, which makes them unstable and highly reactive. To become stable, they must balance their electrons by losing or gaining an electron.

A free radical tries to steal an electron from another molecule and triggers a chain reaction. When this happens, the structure of the molecules involved can be permanently changed, causing irreversible damage.

Now, when an antioxidant is present, it has a surplus of electrons and can, therefore, give an electron to a free radical. This stabilizes it immediately and stops the chain reaction. The sacrificial antioxidant is then oxidized to become a free radical. But the antioxidant has the ability to stabilize even with an unpaired electron and therefore does not become reactive.
